BACKGROUND OF THE PLAY AND THE PLAYWRIGHT

It was 1881. India was under British rule. The revolution of 1857 had stirred the fight for Independence in every Indian. Playwrights like Bhartendu Harischandra used the medium of theatre to protest against the British. He wrote ‘Andher Nagri’ as a criticism of the British policies and systems in India. A lot has changed since then or have things really changed? The Kingdom of Chaos a dance theatre production based on ‘Andher Nagri’ explores this dimension.

Bhartendu Harishchandra went on to be known as the father of Hindi Theatre and Andher Nagri remains one of the most popularly performed plays in India till date. We premiered this play in dance theatre style in August 2019 to a full house in Zurich.
